Dear Supervisor,
We ask that you join many cities, counties and states in adding socially responsible criteria to the County's existing Investment Policy.
Santa Cruz County has adopted formal commitments to climate action, environmental stewardship, human rights, and community well-being. Yet investment decisions made without regard to these commitments can work at cross-purposes with the County’s stated priorities.
We attach for your consideration a draft policy, modeled on Sacramento’s socially responsible investment policy. The draft we are proposing calls for screening criteria, that would exclude investment in entities that are involved in production of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons; tobacco; fossil fuels; automatic rifles marketed for civilian use; private prisons and immigration detention; and committing or enabling human rights violations. The draft also calls for investing locally for community well-being, e.g. affordable housing.
We look forward to investment of the people's funds according to our common values.
Thank you,
